Marvel Studios is increasing its focus on animation. The Disney-owned company plans to establish a “mini studio” to produce more animated shows like the upcoming What If..? (image at top).

In an interview with Variety, Marvel’s executive vp of film production, Victoria Alonso, revealed the news. “We’ll have an animation branch and a mini studio, and there will be more to come from that,” she said. “We’re ecstatic about animation, which is my first love.”

What If…?, an anthology series presenting alternate histories for various Marvel characters, will premiere on Disney+ on August 11. It is the Marvel Cinematic Universe franchise’s first animated series. The animation was created by Squeeze in Québec City and Flying Bark Productions in Sydney, Australia.

Under the Marvel Animation banner, the company has created animated series, television and home video films, and short films. The fate of the unit has been in doubt since the departure of Cort Lane, svp of Marvel Animation & Family Entertainment, in late 2019.
